What Is a Leitner Box?

A Leitner Box (also called the Leitner System or Leitner Method) is a spaced-repetition technique that sorts flashcards into numbered compartments. Answer a card correctly and it moves to the next box, which is reviewed less often; answer incorrectly and it returns to Box 1, which is reviewed every day. Over time the system automatically concentrates your study effort on the material you find hardest.

The Leitner Box is the simplest spaced repetition system ever devised, and one of the most effective. No algorithm, no subscription, no app required — just a handful of cards, a few dividers and a rule for moving cards forwards or backwards.

It works beautifully with everything else on eyeemmeff.com: vocabulary, dates, formulas, cipher alphabets, Rubik’s cube algorithms, and the number–image pairs you build with the Major System or Dominic System. Mnemonics get information in; the Leitner Box keeps it there.

This page explains the method from first principles: where it came from, why it works, exactly what the 3‑box, 5‑box and 7‑box schedules look like, how to build a box this afternoon, and the mistakes that trip most people up.

A note on the old schedule generator

This page previously hosted an interactive calendar tool that generated a review timetable and exported it as an .ics file. That tool has been retired while we build something far more capable: a dedicated Leitner Box application with real card decks, box tracking, progress statistics and review reminders.

In the meantime, the reference schedules below give you every review date you need — they are the same intervals the generator used, so you can copy them straight into any calendar or diary.

Origin & History

The method was popularised by the German science journalist Sebastian Leitner in his 1972 book So lernt man lernen (“How to learn to learn”). Leitner’s insight was almost embarrassingly simple: instead of shuffling a deck of flashcards and working through all of them every time, sort them by how well you know them and review each group at a different frequency.

Physically, the system is a box (or a row of envelopes, or elastic-banded bundles) divided into numbered compartments:

  • Box 1 — new and recently failed cards. Reviewed most often.
  • Box 2 — cards you got right once. Reviewed less often.
  • Box 3+ — increasingly well-known cards, reviewed at ever longer intervals.

The rule that drives the whole thing is two lines long:

Answer correctly → promote the card to the next box.

Answer incorrectly → demote the card all the way back to Box 1.

That is the entire algorithm. Over a few weeks the box sorts itself: your weak material clusters in Box 1 where you see it constantly, and your solid material drifts to the back where it costs you almost nothing. You end up spending the bulk of your study time on the minority of cards that actually need it — which is precisely the opposite of what happens when you re-read notes or flip through a whole deck.

Why It Works: Four Memory Effects in One Box

The Leitner Box is not folk wisdom. It happens to stack four of the best-evidenced findings in memory research on top of one another.

1. The forgetting curve

In the 1880s Hermann Ebbinghaus memorised thousands of nonsense syllables and measured how quickly he lost them. Retention drops steeply within hours and then flattens out. Crucially, each successful review flattens the curve further — the next drop-off is slower than the last. Leitner’s expanding intervals are a practical way of reviewing just before the curve falls away.

2. The spacing effect

Ten minutes of study spread over five days beats fifty minutes crammed into one evening — not marginally, but by a wide margin on delayed tests. Cramming produces a convincing feeling of fluency that evaporates within days. Boxes force spacing by design: you physically cannot review Box 4 tomorrow, because Box 4 isn’t due tomorrow.

3. The testing effect (active recall)

The act of retrieving an answer strengthens memory far more than re-reading the answer. A flashcard is a retrieval prompt, so every card you attempt is a miniature exam. This is why you must genuinely try to answer before turning the card over — peeking turns an exercise in recall into an exercise in recognition, which is much weaker.

4. Desirable difficulty

Retrieval that feels effortful produces stronger, longer-lasting memories than retrieval that feels easy. Expanding intervals deliberately let a card get a little bit “cold” before you see it again. If every review feels trivially easy, your intervals are too short; if you fail constantly, they are too long (or your cards are too big — see writing good cards).

In one sentence: the Leitner Box makes you test yourself, at widening intervals, on exactly the material you are weakest at — and it does so without you having to make a single decision about scheduling.

The Standard Schedules: 3, 5 and 7 Boxes

There is no single “official” Leitner schedule, but three patterns have become conventional. Each doubles (roughly) the interval at every level, so the total cycle length grows quickly while your daily workload stays flat.

Tip: these are guidelines, not commandments. A “cycle” simply repeats — start again at day 1 and keep going. If a schedule clashes with your week, shift the whole thing rather than abandoning it.

How to Build a Physical Leitner Box

Total cost: the price of a packet of index cards.

  1. Find a container. A shoebox, a recipe-card tin, a ring binder with tabbed dividers, or five labelled envelopes all work.
  2. Add dividers and label them Box 1 to Box 5 (or however many levels you chose), plus a final Graduated compartment.
  3. Write your cards — prompt on the front, answer on the back. One fact per card.
  4. Put every new card in Box 1. Nothing starts further forward, even if you think you already know it.
  5. Pin your schedule to the lid, or block the review days out in your calendar.
  6. Each review day, take out only the boxes that are due, work through them, and move each card forward (correct) or back to Box 1 (incorrect).
  7. Stop when the due boxes are empty. Resist the urge to “do a bit more” from boxes that aren’t due — that’s how you drift back into cramming.

A pragmatic compromise many people land on: build a physical box for the subject you are actively learning, and keep a digital archive of graduated cards for long-term maintenance.

Writing Cards That Actually Work

Nine times out of ten, a card that keeps failing is a badly written card rather than a failure of memory. A few rules fix most problems:

  • One fact per card (the minimum information principle). “List the seven causes of…” is an essay, not a flashcard. Make it seven cards.
  • Make the prompt unambiguous. If more than one answer is defensible, you will grade yourself inconsistently and the card will thrash between boxes.
  • Prefer questions to labels. “Capital of Peru?” beats a bare “Peru” on one side.
  • Use cloze deletions for sentences: “The Atbash cipher maps A to ______”.
  • Add a cue, not the answer. A small sketch, a colour, or a mnemonic hint on the front is fine; the full answer is not.
  • Test both directions separately for language pairs. Recognising chien → dog is a different skill from producing dog → chien; make two cards.
  • Don’t memorise what you don’t understand. Understand first, then use the box to retain. The exception is genuinely arbitrary material (names, dates, code tables) — that is exactly what mnemonics are for.

Combining Leitner Boxes With Mnemonics

Mnemonic systems and spaced repetition solve two different halves of the same problem, and most people only use one of them.

Concretely, on this site:

  • Major System — one card per number–word peg (“34 → ?”“mower”). A 00–99 peg list is 100 cards, which a 5-box system will carry to fluency in a few weeks.
  • Dominic System — one card per two-digit person–action pair. Test both directions: number → person, and person → number.
  • Memory Palace — cards for the route itself (“station 7 of the kitchen palace?”) so the structure becomes automatic and you can re-use the palace for new material.
  • Ciphers — the Atbash substitution pairs, the Caesar shifts and the Vigenère tabula recta are all pure rote tables: ideal Leitner material.
  • Rubik’s cube algorithms — encode each sequence with the Major System, then drill the encoded algorithm with cards until your fingers take over.
Mnemonics = memorable encoding · Leitner boxes = optimised review timing · together = durable, long-term recall.

Six Common Mistakes

  1. Adding too many cards too fast. Every new card creates a permanent future review obligation. Twenty new cards a day sounds modest until Box 1 takes an hour. Start with five to ten.
  2. Generous grading. “I nearly had it” is a fail. Be strict; the box can only sort honestly graded cards.
  3. Recognising instead of recalling. Say or write your answer before turning the card over.
  4. Cards that are too big. If an answer has three parts, it is three cards.
  5. Reviewing boxes that aren’t due. This feels productive and quietly destroys the spacing that makes the system work.
  6. Abandoning the system after a missed week. Catch up over a few days and carry on. The box is robust; your enthusiasm is the fragile part.

Dealing with leeches

A leech is a card that has fallen back to Box 1 five or six times. It is consuming a disproportionate share of your study time. Don’t keep grinding it — tear it up and rewrite it: split it into smaller cards, add a concrete image, build a Major System hook for the number in it, or simply decide it isn’t worth knowing. Replacing a leech is almost always faster than defeating it.

Is spaced repetition scientifically proven?

Yes. The spacing effect has been studied since Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s and has been replicated hundreds of times since. Spreading your reviews out over days and weeks produces far better long-term retention than the same amount of study crammed into one session.

How many boxes should I use?

Start with three boxes. Three is easy to keep on top of and teaches you the habit. Move to five boxes once you have more than about 100 cards, and seven boxes only if you are maintaining a large body of knowledge over months or years.

Can I use mnemonics with Leitner boxes?

They are a natural pair. Mnemonics such as the Major System, the Dominic System or a Memory Palace make the initial encoding vivid and easy, while the Leitner Box makes sure you actually revisit that encoding on a sensible schedule before it fades.

What should I store on each card?

One single, atomic fact per card: a vocabulary word, a date, a formula, a definition, a cube algorithm, or a single question with a single unambiguous answer. If a card needs a paragraph to answer it, split it into several cards.

Does the system work for adults?

Yes. Spaced repetition is extremely effective for adult learners, and is widely used by language learners, medical students, musicians and professionals sitting certification exams.

What happens if I miss a review day?

Nothing catastrophic. Simply carry out the missed review on the next day you can, and continue the cycle from there. Consistency matters far more than precision, so don’t restart or punish yourself by demoting cards you haven’t actually failed.

How is a Leitner Box different from Anki or SuperMemo?

A Leitner Box uses fixed intervals shared by every card in a box, which makes it simple enough to run on paper. Software such as Anki or SuperMemo calculates an individual interval for every card from your grading history, which is more efficient but also more opaque and requires a device.

How many cards should I review in one sitting?

Aim for a session you can finish in ten to twenty minutes, which is roughly twenty to forty cards for most people. If a day’s box has grown too large, cap the session and move the remainder to the next day rather than skipping the review entirely.

What do I do with cards that reach the final box?

Retire them to an archive or a “graduated” box and review that pile once or twice a year. If a graduated card ever fails, drop it straight back to Box 1 and let it climb again.

What are leeches and how do I deal with them?
